In general, I have always been a story teller, for as long as I could remember. I wrote the illustrations and story line for my book when I was about 6 years old. It was about a princess who tried to save the world with her friends. I also played dolls with my younger sister and created full stories and plots, each one having a purpose in developing the story.
As a youngster I struggled greatly with reading, it wasn't until I found Harry Potter and a teacher who gave me access to the world within the story, that I fell in love with reading. I read everything that I could get my hands on within the young adult spectrum and I continue my love of YA reading today.
The concept of Afterhogwarts came about one day during my business law class in college. My professor was going on and on about something I don't remember. I began to sketch a character. She was dynamic, she had thick curly hair, wore a beat across her chest with a thick book back. I showed the character to my friend that sat next to me. My friend drew on the picture that my character looked like she belonged in Harry Potter, and I couldn't have agreed more.
Being completely unhappy with the way the last book ended, I decided to continue the series, using what I knew about the story to fill in the missing pieces. There was so much that J.K left out by jumping so far ahead into the future. The series had to continue, so afterhogwarts was born.
In the beginning my writing lacked a lot of confidence. During my third year in college, one of my professors told me that I couldn't write. He thought that I was a foreigner because of my name and told me that people from other countries lacked writing ability because of their accents. I was neither from another country nor did I have an accent. What my professor told me had a profound affect on me. Why couldn't minorities be great writers? What did my name and race have anything to do with my ability to write?
After that, I relied heavily on the comments of friends to gauge if what I am producing is any good.
I don't claim to be a great writer, as many of you can see, I have plenty to work on. What I claim to be is a great story teller. Writing is a skill that most people can learn. Story telling is an art that takes true creativity and talent. As long as I can tell a great story, I will continue to write and improve on my techniques as I go.
